Established in 1963, like Peet's Coffee & Tea, they intended to start and stay focused on bean a "bean and leaf" shop, but they are now inseparable from the cafe concept. They now franchise well beyond their L.A. roots. Under their International Coffee & Tea, LLC umbrella company, they have extensive operations in Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, Israel, and even the UAE.

In Sept. 2009 they announced the sale of their SF operations to CBMSB LLC (a large Johnny Rockets franchisee) - plus plans for rapid expansion in the area. As long as there are L.A. expatriates, perhaps there will always be demand for Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf's mediocre espresso.
