Chain of giant sandwich stores that's heavy on bread and where coffee was once pretty much an afterthought. However, by 2003 they had the foresight and wisdom to use Intelligentsia beans when most San Francisco residents had never heard of them. Today, the operate cafés with dedicated coffee bars sporting heavy Intelligentsia branding ... as if they were "Intelligentsia SF". Originally with outlets located mostly in SF, they have since reached out to Seattle and Chicago and now Southern California and various suburbs inbetween.
By 2013 -- and perhaps spurred on by Intelligentsia's move to buy Ecco Caffe in SF and rebrand it as "Intelligentsia SF" -- Specialty's switched to Peet's Coffee & Tea as its coffee supplier. Our guess is this is identical to what happened to Frog Hollow Farm and Blue Bottle Coffee before Blue Bottle decided to open retail outlets in San Francisco.
