Alice Waters, of Chez Panisse fame, runs this informal, rustic breakfast and lunch café. Very organic, and very French/California. Indoors, there is no formal seating beyond a bench and stand-up counterspace under a skylight. Some picnic tables outdoors. Quality espresso ingredients and equipment (Mr. Espresso), although the baristas do not preheat cups and the emphasis is on large French latte bowls. With a two-group Faema, they produce a mottled dark and light brown crema of moderate thickness. Dark, strong, smoky flavor that's a little overpowering (made more for milk drinks). Served in classic brown, thick-walled ACF cups.
