Review
This family-owned café is typically opened only when a car pulls up in this tiny, remote village and someone calls one of the owners upstairs on their mobile phone to open up the place. It has a typical Portuguese café entrance with a few tables plus a bar in the back that's home to a single-group JoBravo machine used to pull shots of their own coffee. They grow their own coffee in the back of the house and in some of the nearby backyards of neighbors. But despite the minimal visits that come here (though 2010 was their biggest year ever for visitors - primarily non-US), the coffee production (growing through washing through roasting) is so limited that they do not offer their coffee outside of this location. When coffee growing, washing, and roasting is handled by unusual backyard operations, the flavor profile is typically weak and the consistency poor. However, their shots are surprisingly 'professional' - albeit with an even, thin, medium brown crema. It has a somewhat lively flavor of spice, mild pepper, and some stone fruit which is abnormally acidic for the region, but not to the rest of the espresso world. Served in Cup & Saucer Café Nunes logo cups with Sical-branded saucers: they're even running low on serving cups here. A locally steep ?1, but it is a local bean-to-cup operation.
