Review
A longtime neighborhood grocery store and old-fashioned market, the name dates to a famous Portuguese family who established the grocery business over a century ago around 1920. Built in 1900, the building originally operated as a saloon, a general store, and an upstairs performance hall. (They still sell a number of Portuguese specialties for locals and some tourists.) It's probably the city's most historic landmark and even survived a fire that destroyed it in 2003, after which it was restored. They offer a few café tables on the sidewalk out front on Main St. Behind the deli counter and at the window they use a two-group Iberital to pull shots of Outland Java (similar to the oily stuff in bins in the back). It comes with a thin, pale crema that dissipates quickly. It's a large pour, and flavorwise it tases of smoke and a hint of some not entirely unpleasant ash. Served only in paper cups. This tastes of San Francisco espresso circa 1985: darkly roasted with no real fruit.
