They're back. This tiny walk-up window/kiosk for ordering anything served in paper cups shut down in April 2007 as "Chat Coffee" in an ugly name dispute and landlord protest over rent. They reopened a few months later with their original legit owners and Chatz Roasting Company (near Modesto, CA) affiliation back in place - who first pulled out of here in a Feb 2005 sell-off. (The interim owners even lied about their bean sources.) A fold-down, mutant bench is their lone seating option. Staff with marginal training is now replaced with more competency. They don't grind their beans to order - doing batches in advance. They serve espresso with a medium-brown, textured crema of moderate thickness (it used to be thin and pale). Flavorwise, the cup has a mild pungency of some depth but little sweetness. There are also clove-like elements to its flavor with some smokiness that coats the tongue. Good body or "mouthfeel" either way. The paper cups they use taints the flavor, though.
