Don't let the SF Bay Guardian "Best of the Bay" signs in the front window fool you - this is home to some of the nastiest espresso in the city. Dark and scary outlet of a popular, cheap downtown deli chain. Little English is spoken here, so your options for anything out of the ordinary are extremely limited. Among the least savvy/skilled staff when it comes to espresso. The dated La San Marco sits at the ready with the portafilter handles cool and sitting on top of the machine - perhaps an espresso bar's worst offense. The espresso is worse than most drip coffee. No crema. No real body. If you work your tastebuds hard enough, you can barely notice a spice-like flavor. Yet even that competes with a distinct sourness that likely results from the cool brewing temperatures. Revisited in 2008 on a masochistic urge for a blog post and discovered they have discontinued offering espresso. Too bad, given how it defined the precautionary worst of the worst in town for at least educational purposes.
