Espresso bar with character off the beaten North Beach path, at the edge of Russian Hill. Bright corner location at the bottom of the curvy Lombard St. tourist magnet. Mostly coffee, but many microwaveable meals. Pleasant hang-out of rough wood floors, many indoor tables, and Internet access. Several sidewalk tables. Staff look like former bike messengers, but they know what they're doing. Espresso is served short with a dark brown, congealed crema. Relatively meek flavor of dry wood and spice with a medicinal and slightly bitter edge.
