Review
Gallery by day, bar/dj disco for people far cooler than you by night. In the daytime they're mostly empty and will serve lunch from a sandwich bar as people peruse the gallery space. By night, at worst Wednesday nights, they pack them in with lines running out the door. Perhaps my favorite permanent "artwork" is a deranged placard over the bar from Frank Chu (an SF celebrity of sorts who is a combination of a psychotic street person, performance artist, and perhaps the most media-savvy person in the Bay Area). At the closer of two bars, they have a two-group Famea E-91 Diplomat. The staff shows almost zero awareness of good espresso: they store the handles cold and lying dead on the drip tray, and they will toss out short pours as "rejects"! Their coffee grinder is fed by a giant can of Illy. They serve espresso with a very pale but modestly thick crema. It has the flavor of lighter roasted coffee. This isn't so bad, because it's generally rare even in drip coffee. But it's not ideal for espresso. There are also elements of tobacco and ash. Served in classic brown Nuova Point cups. [CLOSED: Red Door Coffee as of 2014.]
