A cleaned up and brightened replacement on the site of the former Cafe Melroy. Instead of dark rooms with a garage sale collection of odd furnishings, owner Katie Morales has created a bright space with a cleanliness unseen in the neighborhood ... complimented only by her sweet, passive, motherly Latina presence. This is still a small café across a Goodwill, so they often cater to the damaged and addicted Tenderloin locals. A few small indoor tables and several set out on the sidewalk to catch the action. There's also a nightly performance calendar. Recent trainees from the Mr. Espresso school, the staff methodically use the brand-new equipment (a two-group Mr. Espresso Iberital) to produce an espresso of an overflowing size. And yet, rather than tasting wholly overextracted, watery, and bitter, they manage to produce a more a mellow double. The cup is flavorful, with a toothsome pungency of herbs. And if you ask to have it "for here", they will serve it in some of the most delicate Wedgewood cups you'll find anywhere. [CLOSED by 2011]
