Notes: Outdoor Seating

This vast space with high ceilings is a combination gallery, café, and lounge. It's immensely popular, and it can sometimes be difficult to find a seat despite the space. The layout is smartly sectioned off with mobile gallery walls. Free wireless Internet with purchases. Numerous tables and chairs inside and outside on the sidewalk, high stool seating, and seating along the real bar. The espresso bar consists of an older three-group Faema supplied by Mr. Espresso, but now serviced by Bay Area Coffee Service. They pre-grind the coffee, but they have good turnover. They serve espresso with a paltry, pale crema however - with a turpeny and herbal flavor with some ashiness. The popularity of the place must be based on the space and the food (even if the service is painfully slow), because the espresso - while doing a brisk business - is dodgy at best. Some of the wiser regulars seem to indulge in gargantuan cups of milk-based drinks to disguise the unremarkable and bland espresso. It's rare when I suggest leaving a popular café to go a block up to the nearby Starbucks for a better espresso, but this is one place where it's clearly warranted. The espresso quality is status quo for SF circa 1993; there's so much room for improvement. [CLOSED: Pacific Catch as of 2007.]
